Applying VST3 Effects
Curlo can load the VST3 audio effects installed on your Mac. Apply reverbs, modulators and other effects to a selected clip with instant preview in the waveform viewer — and they are applied automatically when you export, drag out, or insert into a DAW. Original audio files are never modified.

Scanning VST3 Plug-ins
Curlo never scans automatically — scanning is fully user-triggered:
- Select an audio file and click the effect button next to the volume slider in the waveform viewer (it shows “No Effect” when nothing is selected).
- Choose Scan VST3 Plug-ins from the menu.
- Curlo scans
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3and~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3in a separate helper process, listing only usable effects — instruments such as synthesizers are skipped automatically.
Results are cached locally. After restarting or updating the app, the effect list is restored from the cache instantly; you only need to scan again when your plug-in folder changes.
If a plug-in is broken or hangs, the scan process is terminated automatically. Curlo itself is never affected, and any effects already found remain available.
Applying an Effect
- Drag on the waveform to select the region you want to process (with no selection, the whole audio is processed).
- Click the effect button and pick an effect from the VST3 Effects list.
- The effect’s native parameter panel opens automatically — the same UI you see in DAWs like Reaper. Changes take effect on the next preview playback.
- Press play to audition. The tail of the effect (e.g. reverb decay) plays out naturally after the selection ends.
Choose No Effect from the menu to turn effects off; switching to another audio file resets the selection and closes the panel automatically.
Preview & Export
Effects are only applied on output — the original file stays untouched:
- Preview playback: the selected region (or the whole file) is rendered offline through the effect.
- Drag out to a DAW: the generated WAV includes the effect (with its tail).
- Bounce: right-click export to a folder or collection applies the effect as well.
Troubleshooting
- My plug-in doesn’t show up? Make sure it is installed in one of the two standard folders above and is an effect (sub-categories starting with
Fx). Instrument VST3s (synths, samplers) are not listed. - The panel opens blank or with the wrong size? Close it and re-select the effect. A few older plug-ins may not be compatible with embedded panels.
- Mono audio with a stereo-only effect? No problem — Curlo converts channels automatically, similar to Reaper.
